Karyn Jen Leigh is a Student Researcher currently completing her undergraduate degrees at National University. As a senior in Integrative Psychology and Sociology, her primary area of interest is the dynamics of the place where an individual connects and interacts with large public systems, such as education and healthcare.

In 1995, Karyn attended the University of Colorado-Boulder but put her Bachelor’s in Linguistics on hold to attend an American Sign Language Interpreting Program at Front Range Community College. After graduating with her Associate’s Degree, Karyn has worked as a sign language interpreter for the deaf community for the past 25 years. Having worked in primary, secondary, and higher education, as well as, various healthcare and community settings, she understands the successes and challenges of communication between individuals navigating complex systems.

After raising three children, Karyn returned to her education to complete her Bachelor’s degrees in the spring of 2023. During her studies, she was selected as an Honors Fellow for Social Change and completed a minor in Social Change that culminated in a resource database for students who are deaf to access sign language interpreters and other accommodations in the California Community College system.
